Not simply an exhibition presence, but a proposal submitted through an international competitive process with the aim of making a tangible contribution to the mobility of the Benghazi of the future.
This is the latest international challenge taken on by DITECFER, Italy’s leading railway cluster, headquartered in Pistoia. From 6 to 8 September 2026, DITECFER will take part in Libya in GCUPI-B – the Global Competitive Urban Planning Initiative Benghazi – an initiative promoted by the Fund for Development and Reconstruction of Libya to identify masterplans and innovative solutions capable of contributing to the radical transformation of Benghazi.
DITECFER will participate in the Competitive Track, the programme dedicated to companies, experts and technical teams invited to present innovative solutions for the city’s urban development. Proposals will be assessed on the basis of criteria including technical quality, innovation, sustainability and practical feasibility.
DITECFER is bringing to Benghazi a project specifically developed for one of the strategic connections in the new city: the link between the new airport and the city centre, with a potential subsequent extension towards the Corniche. The aim is to combine the capacity of public transport and continuity of service with the flexibility – and privacy – of individual mobility.
From project to prototype – on display at the stand
At the heart of the proposal is RailEvo, an Italian autonomous rail mobility system developed by the Trentino-based start-up of the same name. Its full-scale 1:1 prototype is currently undergoing validation on a pilot line built in Trento.
For Benghazi, a configuration has been designed to carry up to 6,000 passengers per hour in each direction, using small autonomous six-seat vehicles available on demand, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The vehicles can travel directly to the requested destination without the intermediate stops typical of conventional public transport, thanks to dedicated infrastructure and an innovative vertical switching system.
At Stand A-051, DITECFER will display a 1:5 scale prototype of the RailEvo vehicle featuring the graphic design developed specifically for Benghazi, together with a model of the corresponding rail infrastructure.
“We are not simply bringing a new means of transport to Benghazi. We are proposing a different way of conceiving urban mobility, together with a concrete pathway to make it a reality,” says Veronica Elena Bocci, DITECFER Coordinator and Team Leader in Libya. “Benghazi is pursuing an extremely ambitious vision for its future. Our proposal is that a system born in Italy could achieve a ‘world first’ right here: innovative in its technology, efficient in its performance, and designed with the social and cultural characteristics of the local context in mind.”
